ASIREA has been working hard this year. Fourty nine farmers have planted 74,000 trees in the last six months, which gives an average of 1,510 trees per person, which is about 1.8 hectáreas each.
Jose and Roberto, our foresters, have been visiting all these farms to give advice about planting and taking care of the plantations. Growth of the melina trees has been spectacular, doubling past growth rates!
We are also promoting reforestation all over the province. A local artist designed a great poster which we are distributing far and wide to attract new farmers.
Now we are working hard with other aspects related to reforestation, especially the market for the wood of the first thinnings. This is very exciting because we hope to help farmers have successful business ventures once their wood is mature, starting the third year after planting. Closing the cycle will allow people to sell the wood- which is a way to fix carbon in furniture or homes for example- and then replant, to continue to sink carbon from the atmosphere.
In this way, local families and communities can benefit with eco -friendly plantations instead of polluting monoculture plantations so common here in our area.
Please note that this project was completely funded, but ASIREA has a nursery construction project on Global Giving that still needs everyones help! Please share!
Thank you for helping us make this change!
