Fukushima and Ishinomaki Children Visit Oshika Peninsula for Sports Onigokko Tag
The 1st Sports Onigokko tag Taylor Anderson Cup competition was held in Oshika Peninsula with kids from Ishinomaki and Fukushima. 28 kids from Haramachi elementary in Minami Soma, Fukushima now live separately due to the nuclear power plant radiation accidents. They enjoyed uniting together in clean air Oshika, which is the closest location to the 2011 earthquake epicenter.
The contest was held at Ohara elementary which has only 21 students in total from the 1st to 6th grade. Some kids lost their families including a mother because of tsunami. Those hardship experienced children enjoyed playing Onigokko tag on the same team with three English Assistant Language Teachers from Ishinomaki. The winners received wood tsunami straps made by Endo-san, the builder of the Taylor Bunko bookshelves.

2016 Projects
We are excited to continue many of the projects that we had in 2015 and add new ones as well. We have three reading groups that will continue to read to children, “Soyokaze” at Mangokuura Elementary School, “Watage” at Watanoha Elementary School and “E-Kids” at the Ishinomaki Community Center (www.facebook.com/taylorreadersproject). Usually mothers and volunteers read to the students in English and Japanese, but recently 5th graders at Mangokuura E.S read to 2nd graders.
We plan to have the return exchange of Richmond high school students to Ishinomaki during the Kawabiraki Festival this summer. We will also have the second year of the TOMODACHI Randolph Macon College –Ishinomaki Senshu University Research Exchange where students and faculty will research and visit each other’s school over a ten week period this summer.
We will again provide soccer classes to Ishinomaki kindergartners by Cobaltore soccer school, support Big Up Ishinomaki community center and activities, support Kodopany’ neighborhood park and children’s activities, Kokoro Smile’s work with children affected by the disaster and Sports Onigokko tag.
We look forward to reporting our progress with these and other new projects during the year which could not happen without your support! Thank you!
