ISU Faculty and Staff Visit to Higashihama ES
Higashihama ES Cooking Workshop with TAMF Advisor and Chef
Chiba-san, who is an advisor to TAMF and librarian at Ishinomaki Senshu University, visited Higashihama Elementary School on November 5th, 2020.
They had a cooking workshop with oysters from the sea near the school.
They used recipes from books in their Taylor Bunko. One is Oyster burger and the one is grilled oysters in the shells. They invited a chef in French cuisine, Mr. Fumihiko Sasaki, from Zao town which is in the northeastern part of Miyagi, to have this cooking lesson. Students removed oysters from the shells yesterday.
Please see the photos below of how well the students cooked and enjoyed the time.
They used cooking books recommended by Chiba-san to purchase. She also in a previous visit gave brief English lessons with the cook books. Suzuki-san, the vice principal, tries to expand the students' possibilities in the future by using oysters such as in food processing, food industry, restaurants business and so on in the area where most residents are involved in oyster farming. This encourages the long term recovery of this area that was devastated by the tsunami causing many residents to leave the area because of loss of their jobs and housing.
The film "Live Your Dream: The Taylor Anderson Story" is integrated in Higashihana ES education through Taylor Bunko.
Higashihama ES Taylor Bunko Reading Exchange
Chiba-san and Professor Terui of Ishinomaki visited Higashihama elementary school in September to talk about the new oyster cookbooks the school had purchased at Chiba-san’s direction.
It was their fourth time to have an exchange program through Taylor reading corner.
Children sat on the Taylor Bunko bookshelves during the presentation by Professor Terui.
