Across the United States, tens of thousands of horses are suffering from abuse, neglect and abandonment. Unlike cats and dogs, horses don't have a publicly provided safety net. A licensed rescue focused on ending the cycle of equine abuse and neglect, Sound Equine Options works closely with law enforcement to fill a great need not currently met by local and state governments. Last year, we rehabilitated and found homes for nearly 70 horses, but these represent just a fraction of those in need.
For every law enforcement case we take in, there are about 3 more that must remain in bad situations because we don't have the resources or the capacity to help them all.
By raising $25,000, we will be able to save 10 more horses this winter. We spend, on average, about $2,500 per horse, which includes the veterinary care, rehabilitation and the training necessary to find it a suitable, permanent home. Training is like a life insurance policy for the horses we rescue, helping to ensure they do not find themselves in a neglect situation again.
When we work with law enforcement, it allows us to reach the horses who need us most - those whose owners are unwilling to provide proper care. It holds these people accountable and prevents them from owning horses in the future. It also raises awareness about horse neglect and lets people know that it will not be tolerated in our community.
