Education is out of reach for many Guatemalan children. Middle school enrollment is less than 40% - and even lower for the indigenous Maya. Maya Traditions' Youth Education Program supports children in overcoming barriers to stay in school and build a brighter future for themselves and their families. This year, we want to provide 27 scholarships to high-performing middle schoolers in 7 communities. We also want to expand the Program by including 9 students from the community of Nahuala.
75% of indigenous Maya live in poverty. School enrollment is disproportionately low among indigenous children. Enrollment drops drastically between primary and middle school, as students become disinterested or drop out to financially support their families. We will distribute 36 scholarships to students in 8 indigenous communities. Scholarships will enable these children to continue their education and acquire the tools and knowledge necessary to build a bright future .
Access to education through scholarships promotes a love of learning, and allow students to pursue their dreams. By reducing the financial burden of education, students can stay in school, build a strong foundation for their future, and improve their lives, families, and communities. With a focus on middle school, we are reaching students at a crucial point in their education. Students that stay engaged through these years are more likely to achieve higher levels of academic success.
Providing scholarships reduces the financial barriers faced by the children of Maya Traditions artisan partners, encourages them to stay in school and offers access to private education. Through this opportunity and our enrichment programs, students learn the skills necessary to pursue their dreams, ensure the future economic security of themselves and their families, and be the next generation of leaders in their communities and changemakers in Guatemala.
