Help A Rocha Kenya secure the next 100 acres of Dakatcha Woodland, conserving vital habitat for rare species such as the Sokoke Scops Owl before more forest is cleared.
Dakatcha Woodland, 25-50 km inland from Kenya's coast, is a Key Biodiversity Area and a refuge for 49 IUCN Red Listed species, including the Endangered Sokoke Scops Owl, Clarke's Weaver, Sokoke Pipit and Golden-rumped Sengi. But charcoal burning, timber extraction, farming and expanding pineapple plantations are rapidly clearing and fragmenting this woodland and seasonal wetland habitat.
We protect Dakatcha Woodland by buying threatened forest land from willing landowners and adding it to the A Rocha Kenya Dakatcha Nature Reserve before it is lost. Together with partners, we've already secured 9,531 acres, protecting and connecting important wildlife areas. Years of working with local communities give us the first opportunity to buy land as it comes up for sale. Through schools, churches, & farmer groups, we reduce pressure on the forest while protecting its remaining habitat.
By securing land now, this project will help conserve connected habitat for Dakatcha's rare wildlife and threatened plants. Over time, the expanded reserve will support biodiversity monitoring, habitat restoration, environmental education and community-based conservation around the woodland. The long-term goal is a Dakatcha Nature Reserve large enough toconserve habitat for species such as the Sokoke Scops Owl and Golden-rumped Sengi, while helping local communities remain part of the solution.
