It isn't really Goodbye

By Noelle Rizzieri | Director of Conservation

As Piedmont Wildlife Center looks to the future and the transitions ahead, we have decided to pause our contributions to the Box Turtle Connection project.

Over the course of this project, we have gathered 15 years of valuable data on box turtles in Leigh Farm Park. Additionally, we have provided 90 interns with hands-on experience in telemetry and mark-recapture, helping them advance in their careers. Campers, Duke students, Girl Scouts, and families have all had the opportunity to participate and learn about research and box turtle behavior. The data we've collected, along with other sites across North Carolina, has been published in scientific literature and serves as a foundation for researchers and citizens alike to better understand the impacts we have on our state reptile.

While we are closing this project, we are proud of what we've accomplished and look forward to seeing the continued work and publications from the Box Turtle Connection. We are grateful to our community for your support, and we leave you with an adapted quote from a beloved yellow bear: "But, of course, it isn’t really Good-bye, because the Forest will always be there... and anyone who is Friendly with [turtles] can find it."
