It feels like every year speeds faster than the previous. It's already mid May and our busiest season has not started yet, which is usually Winter and early Spring. That said, we have been incredibly busy already.
In just January to mid May we have treated 55 wombats in the field. Direct treatments mean the individual wombat is right there and gets a dose of Bravecto. When we do population treatments, we don't count the wombats as we don't necessarily see them but we count, map and treat all the burrows.
We are currently doing two population treatment programs, with a combined total of around 160 burrows and will take 15 weeks to complete.
But the bigger effort was helping these 55 wombats to date with direct treatments. When the call comes in, our team sometimes search for hours, if not days, until they find the animal to provide life saving treatment. We have lost 2 that were too far gone to save but the others are still under treatment and healing slowly.
The work is gruelling sometimes. But also very rewarding. It can be heartbreaking too, seeing the incredible suffering. This is why we simply cannot give up and stop what we do. We are currently the only wildlife group doing mange treatment in Canberra and there is no question that if we don't continue, these animals will die.
It takes a village and I am so thankful to our amazing volunteers who give their time, patience and love to do this work. Sometimes in the bitter cold nights of Canberra. Sometimes in difficult circumstances. But they always give their best.
And thanks to you who support us, as our work would not be possible without help from complete strangers, but who love wombats as much as we do. The medicine we buy sometimes cost over $5,000 a month.
As it's volunteer week in Australia, I want to say thank you to anyone who gives their time freely for volunteering to a cause close to their heart. Our work but also that of so many other organisations only thrives because of the hours volunteers donate.
Lets see what winter brings.
I hope you are all staying warm and safe.
Kind regards
Yolandi
