It doesn't seem very long since the first confiscated gibbons were admitted to our transit centre but it is 12 months!
We have had some wonderful new volunteers from Australia helping with the gibbons and other animals. Our most recent crocodile was released about 1 month ago and the leopard cat will hopefully be ready for release soon. The changes to the gibbon " accomodation " , with extensions and more enrichment with the many donations are fantastic to see.
Sometimes It is very sad to see some of the bigger older gibbons who have grown up with human families until they start to cause a little trouble and are then confined to small cages. Although they are in much bigger enclosures, with a much better diet and climbing and swinging furniture they miss their familiar surroundings and families. Some like Munkie love to have their arms fondled and some human company. They all have an opportunity to interact with their own species but sometimes this can lead to injuries so that monitoring their behviour becomes more important. Hopefully with extra funding SRI will be able to build extensive rehabiitation enclosures in more natural environment near Sipirok . The different species (agile gibbon, lar gibbon and Siamang) can thenl be further away from each other and will hopefully be able to be rehabilitated, form pairs and in many years be released in family groups into suitable habitat .
Dr. Jennie is back in Australia now (so apologies for the lack of recent photos - which we will update in the next few weeks).
The babies and younger gibbons have "play-time " together which is a pleasure to watch especially as they gain mobility and test their gym skills!
Thanks again to all our wonderful donors
Dr. Jen
