Challenge

The rural community of San Francisco de Choras, Junin, Peru, faces significant environmental degradation due to the loss of native forest cover across 149.25 hectares of land. This has reduced ecosystem health and biodiversity while limiting sustainable economic opportunities for 130 community members. Without restoration, continued land degradation will further reduce the area's environmental resilience and the community's ability to sustainably manage its natural resources.

Solution

The project will restore 149.25 hectares of degraded land by planting approximately 178,200 native trees through a community-led restoration approach. It will create permanent local employment, provide environmental education for all community members, and strengthen local capacity to protect and restore native forests. These activities will improve ecosystem health while promoting sustainable livelihoods and long-term stewardship of natural resources.

Long-Term Impact

The project will restore native forests, improve biodiversity, protect water resources, and strengthen climate resilience in San Francisco de Choras. By creating permanent local jobs and expanding environmental education, it will build community capacity to sustainably manage natural resources and generate lasting environmental and social benefits for future generations.
