On May 2014 landslides struck Argo district of Badakhshan causing significant loss of life and widespread damage to about 350 households, letting families homeless. The emergency appeal initially focused on providing safe drinking water to the victims. Thanks to the generous donations 110 families have been provided with water filters. At the moment homeless families who live in empty school buildings, uncompleted house buildings or just tents need support to survive the freezing cold season.
Badakhshan is an underserved region in the country due to its harsh mountainous terrain. The village affected by the landslide is one of the poorest regions of the country facing severe winter, including extremely cold temperatures and heavy snowfalls. Families who have lost their homes in the landslide do not have proper shelter. Supplies are needed to support winterization efforts, without prompt action, the families will face serious risks further threatening their lives.
Following our recent emergency support to these victims we now have efficient links and collaborators on site. Moreover need assessment has been conducted and vulnerable families have been identified. The project will allow to provide winterization assistance to the victims. The distribution of blankets, warm clothes, heaters and wood will considerably improve the living conditions of people living in informal settlements and reduce their vulnerability towards seasonal extremes during winter.
In order to face the extreme weather conditions during the following months, the provision of winterization support is a matter of highest concern in order to avoid illness and deaths. The project will help provide ways of fighting extreme winter temperatures to families whose homes were destroyed.
