Accelerator success and progress of rehabilitation

By Tiffany Schroeder | Outreach

Thank you! These two words do not cover the appreciation we have for every person who has donated, shared, visited, or volunteered here at Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary. You have all helped us with the goal to graduate from the accelerator and every penny is working to rescue, rehabilitate, and release wildlife. In the past few months, this has been no different. We have received calls almost daily about an animal we need to go help, or an animal being brought to us.

Christmas day, before the accelerator ended (which you were all an amazing part of making it successful) we received a green sea turtle after it was trapped in fishing nets left in the ocean. The rescue center that would normally take these types of animals has been shut down and therefore we have been doing all we can to help land and sea animals. Her front right flipper was so damaged that we made the tough call to amputate it. Since then we have been able to purchase a large pool for her to be able to swim in and our dedicated team is going at least 2x a week to collect sea water to fill it. The passion here is incredible and you're all allowing us to continue working for wildlife.

Just a few days ago we received a call regarding a young spider monkey being kept illegally as a pet. We received photos of it chained around the neck tied to the bottom of a tree. This is incredibly sad but the government stepped in, confiscated it, and it is now in our care. Our initial observations are hopeful though. It does not appear to be too accustomed to people and we are in communications with other sanctuaries with young spider monkeys for potential introduction. This would allow him to to back into the wild and thrive with other monkeys.

Some recent releases have been an iguana, aracari (small toucan), two opossums, a kinkajou, and a toucan. This is why we do what we do and you make it possible. We are keeping our clinic open for emergencies thanks to your help. It doesn't end here though and look forward to updating you with our future accomplishments.
