Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary rescues injured and orphaned sloths, monkeys, anteaters, and other Costa Rican wildlife. We provide the care they need to recover and be released back to where they came from. Quality care is given in our clinic and sometimes many months are invested when raising baby sloths or anteaters to adulthood. Wildlife taken from the illegal wildlife trade are also brought to try and reintroduce to nature or provide permanent sanctuary when they are not able to be released.
Wildlife around the world face trouble due to human interaction. These interactions can be anything from deforestation to the wildlife pet trade. We receive animals due to electrocutions, illegal pet confiscations, car accidents, and domestic pet attacks (dogs and cats). Our actions are injuring wild animals and taking away their natural habitats. Our clinic received over 500 animals in 2019 that were injured or orphaned, usually due to these human interferences.
We want our jobs to not be needed and for wildlife not to be injured because of humans. Until then, we will provide quality veterinary care to rescue and rehabilitate animals in need. We raise some animals from a week old until they would be found alone in the wild 8 months later. Their diets are calculated regularly based on their weight, age, and specific needs. Injured animals get treated immediately in our clinic with a great vet team and necessary medications for their recovery.
With our visitors, volunteers and tourists, we hope our stories and work will inspire people around the world to make positive changes and be aware of our footprint on the earth. The hundreds of animals we rehabilitate and release will live long after their time with us to continue increasing or maintaining the natural populations so we do not add more animals to the endangered or extinct species list.
