This project aims to give urban refugees in Kampala (most of them escaped the war in the DR Congo which is a French speaking Country) education and empowerment with literacy, life skills and livelihoods strategies in order to survive and become self reliant.
Due to the conflict in the DR Congo, the number of urban refugees in Kampala has risen rapidly from around 30,000 (2008) to around 50.000 in 2013. These refugees don't receive support from UN or government programmes, and since most of them don't speak English, they can't even communicate, let alone get a job, in their host country. Literacy and language problems are cutting them off from the competitive market structures in the city, and some of them are forced into harmful coping strategies.
We formed the NGO "YARID" (http://yariduganda.org) and set up English classes, Computer classes, Business training, HIV prevention, sports and Women's workshops. The aim of this project is to educate and to empower refugees in Kampala with literacy, life skills and livelihoods strategies in order to become self reliant. We expect to train 160 refugees and asylum seekers for English language, 120 for Functional Adult Literacy skills, 120 for tailoring skills and 120 for computer training skills
The refugees will be able to speak English, get jobs and make a living in Kampala. For them, this project is the chance to break the poverty cycle. Some of the trainees will be engaged by YARID to help teach others after the project cycle has ended. All equipment purchased for the project will be retained and maintained so that they will still be of use to future beneficiaries.
