After the August 10, 2026 earthquake in western Colombia, 27 Embera Katio families in El Dieciocho, Choco, have severely damaged homes and are now exposed to heavy rains. Women for Conservation works with women artisans in this community, supporting their livelihoods and economic opportunities. This project will provide emergency roofing and repair materials for 10 affected families, helping restore safe shelter and protect the foundations of their livelihoods.
The earthquake severely damaged homes in El Dieciocho, leaving families exposed to heavy rains and unsafe conditions. Roofs are broken, displaced, or missing, and some walls are also damaged. The community includes women artisans supported through Women for Conservation's sustainable livelihoods work. Damage to their homes is now affecting their safety, belongings, and ability to sustain their livelihoods.
We will provide emergency roofing and repair materials for 10 affected families, including durable roofing sheets, timber and structural materials where needed, screws and fixings, and transport from Medellin to El Dieciocho. By restoring safe homes, the project will help families recover from the earthquake while protecting the women artisans' ability to continue their livelihoods and strengthen their economic resilience.
Safe homes will reduce health and safety risks, especially for children vulnerable to respiratory illnesses, protect belongings, and help families recover with greater stability. For the women artisans we already support, restoring their homes will also help protect the conditions they need to continue their work, generate income, and preserve their cultural traditions. This emergency response can strengthen community resilience and create a foundation for longer-term livelihood recovery.
