Hello everyone,
Hoping you are are well this new year and with great projects to enjoy!
Although- as you may have heard- Costa Rica was hard hit by hurricane Otto, we were very lucky and were not in its path so neither our nursery nor the farmers' plantations were affected.
Our community nursery is at its yearly rest time. In December we stop production because normally it rains too much and too many saplings die from fungus attacks. Also our dry season is around the corner and farmers do not plant during this time. So we are totally dedicated to repairing the nursery structure and carefully replacing what we call "mother trees" which provide us with the small cuttings that will be tall trees in only seven years. Even so, in this last trimester we closed with a production of 7,500 saplings.
We also continued the roofing that storms had destroyed in 2016 because we are hoping to have several good projects- maybe even send trees to other countries and support their reforestation projects!
We are optimistic this year, hoping for a higher demand of trees, although this depends on our national reforestation policies, which we hope to hear announced soon. Thank you all for supporting to this cause- ASIREA is recognized as a leader in agroforestry for farmers in Costa Rica, and truthfully, that is only possible because of so many people who really believe in people and the environment.
