Help prevent new HIV infections in El Salvador

Because of your generous support, from June to August 2026, 66 young men at greater risk for HIV in El Salvador were able to enroll in PASMO’s annual HIV prevention package of services to help them remain HIV negative and have greater control of their sexual health. Among those who enrolled in the service during this period, 80% were between 25 and 45 years old and from the cities of San Salvador and San Miguel. This annual package of HIV prevention services, called “Plan 360”, provides users with a full year of discreet, confidential and high-quality HIV testing and counseling services, other specialized laboratory tests, personalized follow-up, three bottles of preexposure prophylaxis (or PrEP, a highly effective preventive treatment for HIV) per quarter, discounts on services at private clinics and laboratories, and condoms and lubricants. Understanding the needs of at-risk men and concerns around stigma or other structural barriers, PASMO also provided services in extended hours or on weekends for those who cannot receive services during the week due to their work schedules.

Social media and messaging apps continued to play an important role in helping the team remain in constant communication with project participants, while receiving referrals from friends and partners, and disseminating online ads to connect with new potential users. Behind the scenes, the team also strengthened coordination with partner clinics and laboratories by establishing a referral pathway, shared appointment scheduling, and internal tracking tools to better organize services and follow-up.

Supporting people beyond their first visit also remained an important part of “Plan 360”. Since the launch of this annual prevention package of services in El Salvador, PASMO has been able to enroll 386 users who have initiated PrEP; 177 have returned for their first refill, and 74 for their second.

This quarter also brought a meaningful sign of engagement from the people we reach. Users who had already accessed the services recommended them to others in their social circles and communities, helping connect people seeking HIV prevention services with the project. One project participant also chose to become a donor, contributing $315 to help other people access the services. In addition, $400 was raised during GlobalGiving’s July Bonus Day.
