Most HIV prevention services for at-risk people in El Salvador came to a sudden halt in January 2025 with the global pause on US foreign aid. Hundreds of highly vulnerable men who were already receiving free preventive HIV treatment (PrEP) and services through PASMO and our network of private laboratory and clinic partners suddenly lost access to these services. Help us resume free PrEP services in San Salvador, El Salvador and prevent new infections among the most vulnerable people.
The 2025 sudden halt of foreign aid disrupted HIV prevention services provided through local NGOs and CBOs in El Salvador. Around 13,000 people were left without access to PASMO's HIV services, including nearly 2,000 at-risk men who stopped receiving HIV tests, self-tests, condom and lubricant information, and preventive treatment services. This interruption increased their vulnerability to HIV, threatening years of progress and leaving at-risk communities without tools to stay HIV negative.
Your donations will help PASMO restore the access of vulnerable communities in El Salvador to a comprehensive HIV prevention services package, including renewed access to testing services and self-test kits, information about condom and lubricant use, and preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) services. This integrated approach will help keep at-risk people HIV negative.
By restoring prevention services, this project will not only reduce HIV transmission today but also contribute to long-term epidemic control in El Salvador. Sustaining access to testing and prevention tools empowers people to remain HIV-negative, lowers national incidence rates, and protects future generations. Long-term, it will reinforce a culture of prevention, resilience, and healthier communities.
