Summary

There are currently 52 million orphans living in Africa, many who lack paperwork and consequently fall outside of the system. This hinders them from getting access to school, healthcare facilities, universities and the possibility of obtaining a passport. Every child has the right to an identity. Through our project partners, we work closely with governmental agencies by covering the necessary logistical costs to assist children obtaining birth certificates.

Challenge

According to UNICEF there are 1,4 million orphans in Zimbabwe alone, and in Africa the number is as high as 52 million. Many orphans and other underprivileged children face several difficulties which are often closely associated by the lack of birth certificate, a document which is necessity to get access to services including school. Therefore, if you were born in the home, or had parents who passed away, it becomes difficult, if not impossible to get access to government services.

Solution

By providing children without the means to the opportunity to get their birth certificate, we do not only provide children with a sense of identity, but are tackling one of the root, structural causes to lack of quality education, SDG 4. Through local partners, we identify children who lack birth certificates as well as the means to obtain it independently and provide all the necessary costs to get the child and witnesses to get their papers.

Long-Term Impact

To simply pay the fee for education, and to provide resources to increase the standard at a school for greater impact. Thus, it does not tackle the root cause which is hindering children who cannot even become part of the small welfare system which already exists. This will not only give children the opportunity to attend schools, but to get access to healthcare, apply for university and obtain passports.
