Greetings from Diani, 2019 has started with several projects underway to address the educational needs of the Children. A review of the Children’s performance at school led the exploration of providing specialized teaching within the Home. The facilities were there so it was a question of adapting them to the specific needs of those Children in need of extra help. The old workshop showroom has now been turned into a classroom where remedial teachers can now come and have a purpose fitted room to be able to give those Children who need that extra help the lessons that should make a difference in their performance at school. Mwanaasha has struggled to cope with the teaching in the schools that she has attended, and it was recognized that to save her from falling out of the education system, she needed to be home schooled, one on one. With the help of a senior lecturer at one of the most respected teacher training colleges, a suitable tutor has been found and Mwanaasha is now receiving the help that she needs. We also have the good fortune to have back one of our previous volunteers who specialized in child education. She has come up with a project to create a room that is specifically designed to help stimulate the learning instincts in the toddlers. The room has all sorts of equipment, tools and toys that appeal to little children and invites them to explore and in doing so, stimulate the curiosity that all children have to learn about the world around them. Despite these exciting developments, there is always a more sobering side to running the Home. Joy, has been suffering from internal discomfort for sometime, and despite several visits to various doctors, she does not seem to get well. She has now seen a pediatric gastroenterologist who has proposed an endoscopy. It will cost KSh. 85.000,- ( £ 650,-) for the procedure, and we are hoping to raise some funds towards this treatment. Our new bus campaign has been going on well and we have managed to raise KSh.650.000,- (£5.000,-). We are still in full fundraising mode to see if we can meet the shortfall of KSh. 700.000,- (£5.450,-) before June when prices of cars generally go up! Finally, we have joy in reporting that all the little babies are well and progressing in line with the normal development bench marks. We are also expecting a new baby whose mother abandoned him outside the hospital that she gave birth to him. The Authorities have tried to find the mother but their efforts have not been successful until now and the child is in need of a stable environment for the first stage of his life. With our Warmest Greetings and Best Wishes for the Year ahead. Diani Children’s Village Team
