At Age Action, we believe that nobody should be left behind in an increasingly digital world. From accessing services and staying in touch with family to online banking and healthcare appointments, digital skills have become an essential part of daily life. Through our Getting Started programme, we support older people to build the confidence and skills they need to use technology independently.
Recently, we worked with Patricia, an older woman who had never felt comfortable using smartphones or computers. After the loss of her husband, Patricia found herself feeling increasingly isolated, particularly as many of her family members lived abroad. She wanted to be able to video call her grandchildren and manage everyday tasks online, but felt overwhelmed and unsure where to begin.
Through the Getting Started programme, Patricia received one-to-one support from a volunteer tutor who guided her through the basics at her own pace. Together, they practiced using video calling apps, sending emails, navigating websites safely, and recognising online scams.
“At first, I was terrified of pressing the wrong button,” Patricia told us. “Now I can video call my grandchildren whenever I want. It’s opened up a whole new world for me.”
Patricia’s story is one shared by many older people across Ireland who are eager to engage with technology but simply need patient, supportive guidance to get started. By helping older people gain digital confidence, the programme reduces isolation, improves access to important services, and empowers people to stay connected to their communities and loved ones.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Getting Started continues to provide life-changing digital skills training to older people nationwide. Your support helps us match learners with volunteer tutors, provide tailored guidance, and ensure older people can participate fully in modern society.
Together, we are helping older people build confidence, connection, and independence in the digital age.
