This project will provide academic interventions, tutoring, homework help, GED classes, and other supports to New York City's students who fell behind during the pandemic - especially those who live in poverty, a group that was disproportionately impacted.
Due to disruption at schools over the past couple years, test scores among New York City's students have dropped according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Math performance took an outsized hit, falling by a record 9 points since the last assessment. What's more, 41% of city students were chronically absent last year.
High-quality Head Start early childhood education prepares our youngest students for grade school during the most critical period of cognitive growth, while our after-school programming, tutoring, GED classes, job training, internships, and college prep initiatives boost learning among our school age and teenage youth. Furthermore, our Summer Rising, attendance outreach, and community school technical assistance provides students with extra enrichment and support, and educators with training.
Research shows that one-on-one or small group tutoring - a cornerstone of our academic interventions - is one of the most effective tools for students to catch up. By bolstering New York City's students in need during this critical time, we will ensure our city's young people are on track to prepare for their future careers, vocational schools, and colleges of their choice, and have successful, independent adulthoods in the years to come. Together, we won't let COVID-19 impede their potential.
