December Update from The BIG FIX Uganda

During November, The BIG FIX Ugganda held village field clinics in 8 areas of Gulu District where people would not otherwise have access to veterinary services for their companion animals.  Our hospital was also open 7 days a week.  We treated a total of 946 patients and performed 231 spay/neuter surgeries on 224 dogs and 7 cats.  All companion animals brought to our field clinics received a rabies vaccination, de-worming, brief health assessment, treatment of any wounds/injuries, and the guardian was invited to participate in a dog washing and grooming class.  Any dog brought with an unsafe neck restraint (such as a chain, wire, or similar) to a field clinic or to our hospital has that neck restraint removed and replaced with a piece of soft rope (or if we have donated collars, they receive a collar) and the guardian is educated about the dangers of using chains and wires around the necks of dogs.  During November, 496 ropes were exchanged for wires/chains and 576 guardians participated in the washing and grooming of their dogs under the instruction of the BIG FIX field education team.

Also during the month, our hospital treated 8 dogs with chemotherapy for cancerous tumors, 2 cases of parvo, 1 case of kennel cough, 1 hematoma, 2 cases of tick fever, 1 case of allergic dermatitis, 3 cases of severe mange, 2 severe wounds, 4 fractures, 1 poisoning, and 1 car accident multiple injury.  Without The BIG FIX Dog Hospital, all of these wonderful canine companions, each of whom were loved by their guardians and brought to the hospital, would have suffered and had no opportunity for care.

We are so grateful for our donors for helping us to serve these animals and the people who love them.
