Recent Outreach: HEALTH TALK AND MENSTRAUL HYGIENE AWARENESS
We are excited to share highlights from our recent outreach program conducted as part of our ongoing efforts to improve the lives of teenage girls at junior and senior secondary piweyi Lugbe AMAC community Abuja Nigeria.
Health Talk and Menstrual Hygiene Awareness
In this outreach, we gathered teenage girls from different classes in one of the local community school to educate them about personal hygiene, safe sanitation practices, and menstrual health management. Our team of volunteer health workers delivered a practical and interactive session that focused on:
•The importance personal care hygiene and environmental hygienefocusing more on regular handwashing
•Proper use and maintenance of toilets and sanitation facilities
•Dispelling harmful myths and taboos about menstruation
•Teaching safe, hygienic practices during menstruation
The girls engaged actively, asked questions, and shared their own experiences. For many, it was their first time receiving such information in a safe, stigma-free space.
DISTRIBUTION OF MENSTRUAL PADS
As part of this outreach, we distributed menstrual hygiene kits that included sanitary pads, we intend to include soap, and educational materials but lack of funds. These were given to a number of the girls who are most vulnerable and at risk of missing school during their menstrual periods.
Unfortunately, due to limited funding, we were not able to provide pads for all of the students who needed them. We had more girls in attendance than expected, and it was heartbreaking to see some leave empty-handed. However, this has reinforced our commitment to scaling up for more donations for the project so no girl is left behind.D
IMPACTS SO FAR
Despite our constraints, this outreach achieved significant impact:
•110 teenage girls attended the health education session
•70 girls received menstrual hygiene pad
•Teachers and community members expressed appreciation and requested more regular sessions
•Several girls reported they felt more confident and prepared for their next period
One of the girls, Aisha 14 years old said:
“I used to feel ashamed when I had my period. After today, I know it’s normal, and I can take care of myself better.”
Challenges
•Insufficient resources to meet the needs of all participants
•Rising costs of sanitary supplies
•Cultural stigma still limits open discussions in some households
What’s Next
We are planning:
•More outreach sessions in nearby schools and communities
•Expanding distribution of menstrual kits, especially reusable pads
•Training peer educators to sustain hygiene education
•Partnering with local businesses to support pad donations and water access
