Making Lembongan plastic free - an update!

Despite the school holidays here in Indonesia, we’ve been busy checking in with our three schools in Nusa Lembongan, and building on our commitment to help make the island plastic free.

We’re a small team based in Bali, so to ensure we have an ongoing presence in Lembongan we work with other organisations and businesses based on the island to continually raise awareness of the impact of plastic pollution on marine life. Our good friends at Marine Megafauna Foundation held an Aquatic Extravaganza fundraiser, and we contributed bottles as raffle prizes. We’ve also developed a partnership with Bali Hai to raise funds by selling our bottles at their resort and shops in Bali and Lembongan.

Our fabulous School Communications Officer, Dode Gargitha, headed over to Lembongan in June to meet with the schools. One of the key parts of our education program is supporting teachers and students by checking in with them to see how the program is tracking, what feedback they have on the lessons and if there is anything we can do to help or improve. Dode visits a lesson at each school to get a hands-on sense of how it’s all going.

As you might remember from our last update, schools have the autonomy to decide what the best way is for them to deliver our curriculum to students. Usually, one teacher delivers the lessons to students as part of their own class. Two schools on Lembongan have organised to share the workload between three teachers, so far this is working well as it means teachers are able to participate in the program, learn about plastic, pollution and their impacts on the environment, in a way that respects the many other commitments they have as superstar teachers.

SDN 1 and SDN 3 are almost at the end of our eight lesson program, once they provide reports to us on each lesson, we will be heading over to donate bottles to these amazing students. Keep your eyes peeled for our next update!

Your ongoing support means we can expand our presence in Lembongan, and make more visits to the schools. A recurring donation is a great way to help us do this, or why not donate a bottle to a student by buying one of ours?
