The project will work on the small Island of Nusa Lembongan, Indonesia, where the authorities and community have set themselves the goal of becoming plastic free. We believe we can greatly help them. Working with two schools we will train teachers to deliver our eight-lesson plastic education program to a total of 240 students. Plastic cups will then be phased out of sale at schools' canteens and instead, students will purchase water refills in BPA-free stainless steel bottles, which we provide.
Pollution from single use plastics is an urgent problem in our oceans, especially in this region. After entering waterways, plastic absorbs toxins and heavy metals before it is ingested by marine life, threatening local ecosystems. Currently the only way to access safe drinking water in many Indonesian schools is by purchasing single-use plastic cups which contribute to the waste problem and normalise a wasteful approach to consumption at an early age. Long term, behaviour needs to be changed.
This project will educate and reduce the consumption of single-use plastics in 240 students, leading to a lasting benefit for their community. We have been running this project successfully on neighbouring, Bali island for three years and through our bottle donation and plastics education program we've prevented over 100,000 plastic cups from entering and polluting Indonesian waters. We can help lead generational change away from single-use plastics, assisting this island to become plastic free.
Bottle for Botol provides students with a simple, tangible solution to a difficult environmental problem in their community. We empower students to reduce their consumption of single use plastic and encourage them to find innovative ways to further increase their impact. We believe that teaching a child now will lead to educated and empowered future generations who have the knowledge, skills and desire to positively affect their community, helping to create a plastic free island in the future.
