Blue Faery's mission is to prevent, treat, and cure primary liver cancer, specifically Hepatocellular Carcinoma, through research, education, and advocacy. Our work improves the quality of life for HCC patients, supports their caregivers, and gives them hope, information, and a voice.
HCC is the third leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide and accounts for ~90% of all liver cancers. Risk factors include cirrhosis, excessive alcohol consumption, diabetes, aflatoxin, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, cigarette smoking, hepatitis B and C, and obesity. African Americans are 1.5x more likely to get liver cancer. Asian Americans are twice as likely to develop chronic hepatitis B compared to White Americans, and Hispanic Americans are 2.5x more likely to develop liver cancer.
Due to the stigma associated with the risks that cause HCC, symptoms can go undetected or get overlooked, or they do not develop until later stages of the disease. To solve this we offer multiple programs at no cost to spread awareness and educate high-risk, underserved populations to increase the prevention and early detection of liver disease and cancer. In addition to liver disease and cancer prevention programs, we offer liver cancer education programs to patients and caregivers at no cost.
These initiatives could lower liver cancer mortality by promoting early detection and treatment among high-risk, underserved populations. By targeting certain groups like African Americans, Asian Americans, and Hispanic Americans, the programs will help reduce disparities, improve survival rates, and ultimately decrease healthcare costs through enhanced prevention and management of liver disease.
