Within hours of Russia's invasion in 2022, Outright International began mobilizing support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) groups in Ukraine. In wars and other crises, LGBTIQ people may face higher risks yet are often left behind or excluded from humanitarian relief efforts. As the war rages on and as winter approaches, our partners in Ukraine continue to need support to ensure the survival of LGBTIQ people and the movement itself.
When a war, like the one in Ukraine, strikes, LGBTIQ people are often left behind by humanitarian efforts and cannot always count on mainstream relief organizations for help. LGBTIQ individuals in Ukraine have a basic right to survival and require food, water, safe shelter, and access to social support, medical care and vital medications. There is no end in sight for this conflict, and the needs of LGBTIQ people in Ukraine continue to be great.
Your donation provides emergency assistance to LGBTIQ people in Ukraine who need safe shelter, food, medical supplies and medications, relocation assistance, mental health support, and other types of humanitarian assistance. As winter approaches, we expect to receive more requests for power equipment, such as generators and power banks, due to Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. We will also support Ukrainian LGBTIQ refugees in surrounding countries who have fled the conflict.
Ukrainian LGBTIQ organizations need to get through this crisis so that they can be a part of the rebuilding efforts after the war's end. Your donation ensures that strong and dynamic LGBTIQ organizations and leaders will continue to provide vital services to the Ukrainian LGBTIQ community in the long term. Put bluntly, the stakes are high - you can help support the survival of the Ukrainian LGBTIQ community in Ukraine and lay the foundation for an inclusive society in Ukraine's post-war future.
