Speaking with the Maleku at Palenque Margarita
At La Reserva 2010 has been a busy year. Over 12,000 trees have been planted and a whole host of new projects are in the works - the most exciting being the work we’re doing to help the native Maleku regain some of their ancestral lands so they can be reforested. Hundreds of hours of work have gone into this project, you can read more about it on Roberta’s blog. The Maleku Strategy and The Maleku Strategy II
We’ve established a relationship with our first corporate sponsor who are creating a campaign that will allow us to plant 35,00 trees in 2011. We’re confidant this will be the first of many relationships in which companies who want to reduce their carbon footprint will chose to work with us to plant more trees
The hundreds of hours that have gone into these projects are primarily done in our small office - we’ve pushed the bed in our second bedroom to the wall to create space in this 8‘x10‘ room for a desk and small file cabinet. It’s where our newly purchased second-hand iMac computer sits, and we’re so very grateful for the donations that made that purchase possible.
We would love to be able to update some of our other equipment as well. Each change we make in having better equipment makes our work more efficient - and working more efficiently ultimately means getting more trees planted. So this year we’d love it if you would make a gift donation to this project so that we can continue to do the work that will bring healing to our Mother Earth.

Thank You For The Help

Happy Computer Geeks
To date this project has received $833 in donations. Our webmaster, David Forester, has a three year old 20” iMac desktop he needs to sell. Since my old laptop is on it’s last leg we offered to buy the new/used desktop for $800. David accepted the offer and brought the beautiful computer over last week, September 28th.
The new computer has a webcam so that in the future my colleagues will be able to actually see me rather than the old photo of me holding Chichas, the Two-toed Sloth we rehabilitated and released last year here at La Reserva.
This project is progressing thanks to all of you. Check out the photo of me sitting back in my office chair, a real slouch, at the new computer. Also a photo of David Forester, Daniel and me the day he brought the computer. We took it with a new software in this computer called Photo Booth. It really is like the old time booths we used to go into with our friends and do stupid stuff.
On October 12th Global Giving is once again offering their bonus incentive. There is $100,000 in matching funds, but the percentage matched is based on a graduated scale. The more a you give, the higher the matching percentage and they're matching up to $2,500 per donor! This is a great opportunity to stretch your donation dollars even farther and help us finish our office upgrade. We still need a laptop and office furniture. Please give now and help this dream become a reality.

Cyberspace = More Forests

The future is in our hands
There is much to be grateful for at La Reserva: the life-sustaining rains that have begun to fall once more, the recent planting of the Increasing Tenorio Volcano Forest project, the creation of new projects that will help us move toward our goal of planting as many as 100,000 trees this year.
We find much joy in our work. Every time a new species of plant, bird, or animal is found within the La Reserva property our dedication to reforestation is reaffirmed. We have seen first hand that “if you plant it, they will come!” But we also know that we could be more efficient in our work with an up-graded computer and better software. Our 7-year old Mac has served us well, but it’s time for it to be retired. We’re well aware that there is greater appeal in supporting the projects that directly plant trees and preserve species, but the work behind the scenes, the work done everyday at the computer is a crucial part that helps us accomplish our mission. Having better equipment as well as having the ability to pay for the tech support we need occasionally will make us even more effective in our goal to Keep On Planting!
