Thanks to your generous support, Save the Children has delivered critical humanitarian assistance to children and families affected by the Magnitude 7.8 Mindanao Earthquake. Since the onset of the emergency, lifesaving relief, protection, education, food security, and cash assistance interventions have reached thousands of survivors across the most affected communities.
21,295 individuals directly reached, including 12,177 children (57%) and 9,118 adults (43%) across 3 provinces/cities, 7 municipalities/cities, and 35 barangays
Our humanitarian operation has also supported communities served by: 4 hospitals, 35 schools, and 2,811 households.
To help families meet their immediate needs and restore a sense of normalcy after the earthquake:
These interventions have helped displaced families create safer temporary living conditions while longer-term recovery efforts are being planned.
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)Access to clean water and hygiene remains essential in preventing disease outbreaks after disasters. Through donor support:
These items are helping families maintain safe hygiene practices and access cleaner water despite disruptions to local services.
Child ProtectionChildren affected by emergencies often face heightened stress, fear, and protection risks. Save the Children provided:
These activities support children's emotional well-being, help restore a sense of safety, and create opportunities for positive coping and recovery.
Education in EmergenciesTo ensure learning continues despite disruption:
These interventions provide children with safe environments where they can continue learning, regain routines, and reconnect with peers and educators.
Food Security and NutritionTo address immediate food needs among affected families:
This support helped vulnerable households meet basic nutritional requirements during the emergency phase.
Multi-Purpose Cash AssistanceRecognizing that families have diverse recovery needs, Save the Children provided:
Cash assistance enables families to prioritize urgent expenses such as food, transportation, medicine, shelter repairs, and other essential needs.
Children accounted for more than half (57%) of all people reached through the response. By combining child protection, education, shelter, WASH, food assistance, and cash support, the response addresses both immediate survival needs and the longer-term recovery and well-being of children affected by the earthquake.
The establishment of temporary learning spaces, distribution of educational materials, and provision of psychosocial support have been particularly important in helping children regain a sense of stability and routine following the disaster.
While significant progress has been made, affected families continue to face recovery challenges. Ongoing needs include restoration of safe learning environments, strengthening child protection mechanisms, recovery of household livelihoods, and continued support for safe shelter and WASH services.
With your continued partnership, Save the Children remains committed to supporting children and families as they move from emergency response toward recovery and resilience.
Thank you for standing with children and communities affected by the Mindanao Earthquake. Your support is making a meaningful difference in their recovery journey.
