Family Gardens Benefit from Nutritional Education

By Gillian Wilson | Project Leader

Deciding what to grow in a garden is part of the training APROSADSE provides to it's 50 families that are starting their home gardens. A workshop was held, particularly for families with high levels of malnutrition, on the benefits of growing fruits and vegetables in their gardens. Vegetables like squash, beets, beans, and corn are important parts of the local diet- but as globalization impacts community diets, many of these healthy and nutritious, local foods have been overshadowed by cheaply processed foods.

Using organic compost and fertilizer for gardening was another important topic covered by APROSADSE's workshop. Sustainable and ecologically friendly, organic fertilizer is also cheaper and families can make it themselves via backyard compost. Training was also held for families on how to care for the gardens and cooking recipes with support from the Xilotepec Association.

Learning valuable skills in how to produce nutritious food for the family increases the overall access impoverished families have to good nutrition. Thank you for supporting this initiative to help make families healthy!
