Project Report | Apr 2, 2025
Help Gift Disabled South Africans a Wheelchair

By Jessica Gordon | Sweethearts Team Member

The Sweethearts Foundation remains committed to transforming lives by providing mobility to individuals with disabilities in South Africa. Through the incredible support of our donors and volunteers, we have continued to collect and recycle plastic bottle tops and bread tags to fund wheelchairs for those in need. This report outlines our progress, key achievements, and future goals.

Project Impact & Achievements

Over the past few months, your generous contributions have enabled us to:

  • Distribute 10 Wheelchairs: Through the continued success of our #TopsAndTags initiative, we have been able to donate 10 wheelchairs to beneficiaries across the country, providing them with newfound independence and mobility.

  • Expand Our Collection Network: With the support of volunteers, businesses, and schools, we have increased the number of collection points, making it easier for communities to participate.

  • Strengthen Partnerships: Our collaboration with eWASA and other recycling partners has helped streamline the collection and processing of recyclable materials, ensuring sustainability.

  • Raise Awareness: We have engaged with schools, corporate partners, and the broader public through social media and events, highlighting the impact of recycling and the importance of mobility assistance.

Beneficiary Spotlight

Each wheelchair we provide changes a life. Here are some of the incredible stories from recent recipients:

  • Celine's Journey: A 27-year-old woman with cerebral palsy who longed for independence. Thanks to your donations, Celine now has a yellow power chair that allows her to move freely.

  • Ms. Legae’s Story: An avid reader and shopper who became reliant on others after a fall in 2020. With a light electric wheelchair, she can now visit her favorite places with ease.

  • Baby Cyril: A young boy with severe neurological impairments who lives in a care home. With his new specialized wheelchair, his caregivers can transport him safely and comfortably.

Challenges & Lessons Learned

While we have made great progress, we continue to navigate challenges such as:

  • Fluctuations in Recycling Revenue: The value of recyclable materials varies, impacting the funding for wheelchairs.

  • Increased Demand: The number of applications for wheelchairs continues to grow, underscoring the need for more resources.

  • Logistical Hurdles: Ensuring timely delivery of wheelchairs to remote areas remains a challenge, requiring stronger transport partnerships.

Despite these obstacles, we are committed to finding innovative solutions and increasing our impact.

Next Steps & Future Goals

Looking ahead, we aim to:

  • Increase the Number of Wheelchair Donations: With your continued support, we plan to provide even more individuals with mobility aids.

  • Expand Recycling Initiatives: Introducing new partnerships and awareness campaigns to boost collections and funding.

  • Enhance Beneficiary Support: Ensuring recipients receive not just a wheelchair, but also guidance on proper use and maintenance.

Thank You!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to every donor, volunteer, and supporter who makes this project possible. Your generosity is changing lives, one wheelchair at a time. Let’s continue to roll towards a future where mobility is accessible to all!
