Growing a Stronger Circle of Care in Papua

By Team Bumi Sehat | Project Leaders

Dear Donors,

For the past ten years, our Papua team—led by midwives Sisilia, Wiwit and Dina—has provided compassionate maternity care to families throughout the Sentani region of Papua. Together with our obstetrician, Dr. Maxy, and four dedicated volunteer midwives, they work tirelessly to ensure mothers and babies receive safe, respectful care in one of Indonesia's most geographically challenging regions.

Many of the communities we serve can only be reached by canoe across Lake Sentani. The journey may be long, but every mother deserves skilled care close to home. Papua continues to face some of Indonesia's highest rates of maternal and newborn health challenges. Malaria remains widespread and can increase the risk of miscarriage, premature birth and low birth weight, while untreated sexually transmitted infections can lead to serious complications for both mothers and babies. Thanks to our on-site laboratory, Angel Hiromi can screen for malaria, sexually transmitted infections and other pregnancy risk factors, allowing our team to begin treatment as early as possible.

Our four volunteer midwives are already fully qualified, caring professionals. To continue practising under Indonesia's professional standards, however, they must complete an additional year of education. At present, Bumi Sehat can only provide a modest volunteer stipend.

This year, our hope is to raise enough support to send all four volunteer midwives back to school. Your generosity will strengthen maternal care for thousands of families in Papua for years to come by investing not only in individual midwives, but in the health and future of their entire community.

with love and gratitude,

Ibu Robin Lim and Team Bumi Sehat Papua
