The Porridge Kitchen is a vital initiative launched by The Nasio Trust to address growing levels of malnutrition among children under five in Mumias West. Each week, over 20 children and their mothers attend the kitchen sessions, where they are served nutritious millet porridge enriched with spirulina, a natural superfood known for its high protein and vitamin content.
More than just a feeding programme, the Porridge Kitchen offers a holistic approach to early childhood health. Mothers are trained in infant care, hygiene practices, and balanced nutrition, equipping them with the tools to support their children’s development long after the sessions end.
Impact to Date:
80% of children with signs of acute malnutrition have shown full recovery.
The remaining 20% have improved significantly and are no longer considered at immediate risk.
Mothers report increased knowledge and confidence in caring for their children.
The Porridge Kitchen is helping ensure that no child is too hungry to grow, learn, or thrive. With continued support, this simple yet powerful programme can be expanded to reach more vulnerable families across the region.
