Increasing food prices and climate change have caused a spike in malnutrition among vulnerable children in Kakamega County, Kenya. Children not yet in school are unable to benefit from free school meals and often go without a meal. The Nasio Trust's porridge kitchen would ensure that children do not go hungry and lead healthy lives.
Increasing poverty due to climate change and a global economic crisis is leading to severe malnutrition amongst vulnerable communities, particularly children, in Mumias West Sub-County, Kenya. Children below the age of 6, who are not yet in school, are unable to access free meals provided at government schools. As a result, they lack a stable source of nutrition causing health issues like Kwashiorkor and stunted-growth.
The Nasio Trust's porridge kitchen will help provide a nutritious and balanced meal of porridge with added spirulina supplements to young, vulnerable children under the age of 6 or those who present with severe malnutrition. Through the porridge kitchen functioning out of our Early Childhood Development Centre, a healthy meal will be provided everyday to at least 10 children in need. The kitchen will act as a safety net against hunger for children till they are old enough to join school.
Access to regular healthy meals will help children develop at the right pace and remain healthy. This will further ensure that they remain in school and do not drop-out due to illness, enabling them to compete with their healthy peers. Along with regular meals for young children, the porridge kitchen project will also empower parents to run their own community kitchen gardens for long-term redressal of food insecurity.
