Update on Nasio's Porridge Kitchen - September 2024

Since the last update report, The Nasio Trust's Porridge Kitchen has started supporting 26 children affected by malnutrition along with 24 of their mothers through weekly distribution of meals and assessment of the impact of the porridge on their healthcare.
The community nurse and nutritionist have been supporting the Community Livelihoods team, that leads the project, and providing their expertise through growth and weight monitoring, educating and sensitising the young mothers on hygiene and making the most out of their diet, as well as through the establishment of kitchen gardens for more long-term support.
Six out of the twenty-six children have already gained weight since their enrolment into the programme 4-months ago. The mothers involved with the project are also now going to be trained in income-generating activities so that they do not have to rely on their agricultural incomes alone.

Mothers and children at the Porridge Kitchen
The Nasio Trust's Porridge Kitchen project has been running for over 10 months and has reached over 200 children and vulnerable mothers suffering from malnutrition. Established on a rotational and needs-basis, children enrolled in the project are 'graduated out' once their Body Mass Index (BMI) reaches the medically-healthy level for their age. This allows the charity to enrol other children in need while continuing to provide essential monitoring support to those who have been exited.
The twenty children and mothers currently benefitting from the programme have seen significant positive change. Four children have already been discharged and have reached normal nutritional levels. None of the children are in a severe and acute stage of malnutrition. The other affected children continue to be provided with porridge made out of millets and spirulina to bolster their health. Sharon, the Nasio Trust's nutritionist, and Eunice, the manager in-charge of the project have successfully transformed the porridge kitchen into a space where mothers can relax, have a meal, and be educated in important childcare and nutritional facts. Instead of being held at Nasio's medical centre, the porridge kitchen is now held at different locations across Musanda to ensure that no mother and child have to travel unfairly long distances to avail the porridge.
We would like to thank our supporters for their genority that has enabled us to make a tangible difference to vulnerable children's lives and ensure that they have the food security they need to grow into healthy adults.

Update on Nasio's Porridge Kitchen - December 2023

Through the support of our regular donors and through GlobalGiving-driven donations, we have fundraised more than half of our target of $2000 for the Porridge Kitchen. The Nasio Trust's Porridge Kitchen project was kickstarted in summer 2023 to reach children and mothers in Mumias-West, Kenya who were suffering from malnutrition.
As part of the project, mothers and children identified by our community health nurse and nutritionists through their outreach into local villages are provided with nutritious porridge at Nasio's medical centre. The porridge, made out of millets and sorghum, is further fortified by Spirulina to improve the BMI and MUAC scores of the children affected. The mothers participate in cooking the porridge and are provided with 1 kg of flour to take home to their families. The households of those affected by malnutrition are also in severe need of adequate nutrition. The community health nurse and nutritionist offer training to the mothers in post-natal healthcare, maintenance of hygiene, and sourcing the most nutrition from locally-available foods.
Since the last reporting period in August, the porridge kitchen has been regularly serving 16 children under 5 and their mothers every week, with over 250 meals served. Out of the 16 children, 3 suffer from Severe Acute Malnutrition. Three supported children have reached normal weight while 11 have progressed from severe to moderate malnutrition through the porridge kitchen's intervention. Five children have been discharged from the programme altogether as they have become healthy. Follow ups at the children's homes are made regularly to ensure that they live in a safe and hygienic environment. Children such as Ferdinand have been positively affected by the programme and he is no longer in danger of contracting other illnesses due to his malnourished state.
