Gallmann Conservancy Continues Building Firebreaks

The dry season is coming, and with it comes a greater risk of fires caused by poachers. In the scrubland, the incidence of wildfires has the potential to burn thousands of acres of rich, diverse habitat for wildlife. The Gallmann Conservancy is constantly building firebreaks to stem the tide of these potentially devastating fires. Building the firebreaks is time consuming and expensive, but it is absolutely crucial if the conservancy is to remain a refuge for some of the most threatened of wildlife. The firebreaks that the Gallmann Conservancy was able to build in 2013 with donations from you and others prevented poachers from using arson as a tactic to poach elephants for their ivory.
Aside from reducing the destructiveness of fires and poachers, creating the firebreaks really helps out the people and the families of the people who build them. Getting members of the community to create the firebreaks not only provides jobs, they provide firewood and slow the rate of deforestation.

Dear Friends,
All of us at Creating Hope International (CHI) want to thank our donors for supporting the Gallmann Africa Conservancy in its project to build 300km of firebreaks. Though they weren’t able to build all 300km of these firebreaks, they were able to achieve about half of their goal. The construction of these barriers saved the conservancy from being destroyed by wildfire and preserved the habitat of the many animals who call the conservancy home.
The preserve still faces many challenges, but because of the support of our donors through Global Giving the firebreaks that were built have lessened the threat of wildfires. The folks at the Gallmann Africa Conservancy are really thankful your help and will continue to keep this beautiful and pristine land a refuge for the majestic, but threatened, African wildlife living within its borders.

140km of Firebreaks Built to Stop Wildfires

All of us at Creating Hope International (CHI) would like to thank you for your support of our project to create 300km of firebreaks for the Gallmann Africa Conservancy. Because of your support, our friends at the conservancy were able to build about 140 Km of firebreaks and prevent disastrous wildfires from striking the preserve. After their valiant 50 year-old Caterpillar D6 broke down, they were left to struggle putting out fires ignited outside the conservancy that were brought in by the wind. Armed with wet blankets, sheets, sacks, and anything else they could get their hands on, they were able to keep the fires at bay with the help of their selfless staff, retirees, and their neighbors. Thankfully, the firebreaks did their job and damage was mitigated. They continue to build firebreaks to prevent wildfires from destroying one of the largest wildlife preserves in Africa. With your support, we can help them make this a reality. Thank you so much!
