Dear Friends,
Ms. Amin talks about “How reading subtitles is improving literacy in rural India” in her article on Mint Lounge. She talks about Ms. Kumari’s (a beneficiary of SLS from Jehanabad district, Bihar) journey which is a part of the Billion Readers (BIRD) project, launched in 2021 by PlanetRead, which aims to promote literacy across India through same-language subtitling (SLS) in entertainment content, especially for young girls and women in marginalized communities facing educational challenges.
Girls and women generally have access to television, so it becomes a way for literacy to reach them, acknowledging this, BIRD prioritises adding SLS to content that young girls and women watch, which, according to their survey, is mostly music programs such as Rangoli, cartoon shows, educational content, and TV serials.

American actor and comedian, Mr. Black on his blog on AQi, mentions that Subtitles should not replace traditional reading, but can serve as a valuable tool for enhancing literacy at home. Click here to read in detail.
“Turn on the Subtitles to boost kids’ literacy”, an article by Ms. Murfin on Seattle’s Child, says that there’s a move afoot to encourage parents to use subtitles when watching television with kids which in turn helps billions of children learn to read. Read the entire article here.
Stay tuned for more updates.
Warmly,
Parthibhan
