2016 Award Gala For Program Participants

For the very first time VAP organized for a gala award ceremony that brought together program participants and representatives from different areas around Nairobi. Amongst the people invited were: teachers, parents, community coaches, local administration and volunteers. The gala was geared towards celebrating the successes achieved in the year 2016 and appreciating and rewarding outstanding schools, community chapters, teams, teachers, parents, coaches, and volunteers who poured in unwavering support and spent countless days, hours and minutes in making our communities better. The gala was spiced up with a brief video and pictures about VAP’s programs in the community and its milestone with a cool 2014 world cup music in the background. The awards were spread out into various categories including winners of Wasichana Wacheze league ‘Girls Play’ and the runners up who received trophies and medals, best player of the season, top scorer of the season, best defender, etc. Also awarded with trophies and medals were the winners of Kick 4 life junior football league including coach, teacher and parent of the season. “Am very glad for the impact that VAP programs have heard in my life.” Said 14 year old Rembu from undugu primary school. “Since the inception of VAP programs in my school, participants have really improved in various aspects of life also including knowledge in HIV/AIDS, am looking forward to continue with the program in 2017.”Said Mr Karoli the head teacher of Zawadi primary school.

Football and Condoms League

Football and Condoms League in Action

With the holidays catching up with us and the fact that all schools have closed for December holidays, VAP has organized a 20 team football and condoms league. The league which is played on 3 different playing fields is targeting 30 teams of youth aged 16 years and over. During this period of football league which is expected to end by 1^st of December which is the climax and it being World Aids day. Players and their coaches are engaged in distributing condoms to their fellow youth and the community at large as well as training them on proper use of condoms. Despite the normal points gained on a regular football game, the team and the coaches who distribute more condoms, gain an extra point of the field. The finals of the league will be played on AIDS day where players and community members will get an opportunity to know their HIV status by being tested. According to the National Aids Control Council’s Kenya Aids Response Progress Report 2016, young people (15-24) significantly contribute to high HIV burden in the country. They constitute the largest proportion of people living with HIV. Notably, they have contributed 51% of adult HIV new infections showing rapid rise from 29% in 2013.A number of factors have advanced this alarming rate of infection such as incorrect perception of their risks on HIV, limited knowledge on sexual behavior that expose them to HIV such as failure to resist forced sex from partner, having sexual intercourse under influence of alcohol or drugs among others. “Am glad to participate in the football and condoms league because I have received information on how to use condom correctly and also gain information on HIV” Said 17 year old,Rakili from Zaragoza FC.

US TV Celebrity Visits HIV project

Williams Talking About HIV with Participants

United States Television celebrity actress, comedian, and singer, Williams best known for her role as Marnie Michaels on the Home Box Office (HBO) comedy-drama series Girls, togetherwith her accompanying crew from ONE organization made a surprise visit to VAP offices to get to know more about its programs and the combination of football as a catalyst in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The team that arrived in a convoy of 3 vehicles including media team and security details were taken through VAP’s programs and later on headed for a site seeing visit in one of the schools where they also participated in the SKILLZ Kenya, HIV/AIDS awareness program activities conducted by SKILLZ coaches. Away from her usual role as ‘Marnie Michaels’ on the HBO comedy drama series Girls, Allison was handed a new role as a ‘SKILLZ Coach’ on SKILLZ Kenya program during the few hours of the program implementation where she engaged participants in football based activities, talks and discussions about HIV.

Young Leaders' Workshop

40 young leaders drawn from various schools representing Mrembo chapters converged for one day ‘Leadership’ training at VAP headquarters. The trainings covered a wide range of topics including: leadership, types of leaders, characteristics of leadership, roles and quality of a good captain, how to be a captain amongst other topics. Majority of the attendees being captains of their respective chapters had their captaincy buskets fully loaded with skillful and helpful information that would shape up not only their career but their future life.VAP has been building, strengthening and utilizing these chapters as launching pads of future girls’ football teams and program mentors.

Strengthening Our Communities

A group of parents, teachers, and community coaches of VAP programs from different communities and schools assembled at VAP offices for a one day meeting geared towards looking at the side mirrow of 2016 programs, challenges and successes. The meeting spearheaded by VAP senior and master coaches collected diverse views from attendees that would contribute towards building and strengthening programs that would develop a stronger community.Attendees were also taken through all VAP programs with each and every head of VAP department narrating the way they do their programs and the kind of support they would need from the attendees. The meeting concluded with a clear direction and need of working together towards building a stronger community.
