New Team of HIV Fighters In the Communities

A battery of 20 fresh,young and energetic local coaches mixed with former VAP program graduates were amongst the newly recruited coaches who attended the one week training of trainers’ course at VAP headquarters.The trainings included theories of HIV and the practical sessions integrated with football based activities with key  HIV messages.Participants were also trained on :Childrens’right s and protection,how to include fun based activities in the learnings,understanding facilitation and coaching,participants’ interaction and group management ,how to be able to take perfect training session with the youth by effectively dealing with dufficult situations during program implementation,etc.The flagged off coaches armed with bullets of football based HIV messages are now hitting the grounds  across various communities.

                                          GlobalGiving Ranks VAP

As a result of its active engagement towards changing the lives of youth in the communities VAP received a ‘Top –Rank’ organization honor for 2016 from GlobalGiving, www.globalgiving.com. honor  was accompanied by the stories that were amongst the most impressive for the year 2016 Our Top 16 Stories from 2016 (Scroll to story 14) which were highlighted on GlobalGiving website. VAP would like to direct all the credit to its ever busy monitoring and evaluation team has been working tirelessly on both qualitative and quantitative systems to making sure that the programs’ impact are well evaluated and monitored and that the participants and community are part of the building process.

                                    Skillz Kenya Spreads Its Tentacles

2017 has seen the spread and the development of Skillz Kenya program into Westlands part of Nairobi, (Westlands Chapter). Five coaches based in Westlands  part of Nairobi who were amongst the new coaches who graduated from the recent training of trainers’ workshop will be tasked to spearhead Skillz Kenya programs in the westlands parts of Nairobi including :Kawangware,Kangemi and its environ. The new coaches possess community role model status by also playing for various football clubs within Westlands. Despite implementing programs in schools and community centres, the team will work with other volunteers within their vicinity in organizing other football based outreaches reaching out to the Westlands youth and its population through; tournaments, football leagues and other awareness events.” Having witnessed the devastation of HIV and the way it has claimed the lives of many youth including my close friends, I feel a great honor to join my fellow youth and be in the forefront of creating awareness to the community that iam from.” Said 18 years old, Florence

                                      Gauging Participants Knowledge on HIV

Now that it’s all systems go! With all schools fully operational, VAP coaches are scattered in several new schools within the city reaching out to youth with health messages. The first weeks of January coaches were engaging participants  with signing of program contracts,commiting themselves into the program, adhering to the rules and regulations of program with mutual respect to one another’s information and answer  as well as conducting program’s pre-surveys, to gauge the knowledge of participants towards the programs."Am happy to have learnt new information about HIV.Am eager to learn more about HIV from these coaches and whatever that am learning i will share the information with my friends at home and around the community."Said 14 year old Mwizani.
