One Meal, A Future for Goma's Children

By PASCAL | Coordinator

Goma, North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, continues to face a severe humanitarian crisis driven by armed conflict, displacement, loss of livelihoods, and rising food insecurity. For many children, the journey to school begins with an empty stomach. Hunger makes it difficult to concentrate, participate in class, and remain in school, while families struggling to meet their most basic needs are often forced to make impossible choices. Our Help Feed War-Affected Children in Goma project was created in response to this urgent reality. With a fundraising goal of $10,000, the project aims to establish school canteens in public primary schools in Goma and provide vulnerable children with one hot, nutritious meal each school day.

The project is currently in its preparation and resource-mobilization phase. We are identifying participating schools, assessing the needs of vulnerable learners, and preparing the local partnerships and volunteer support required to launch the school canteens. The planned model will prioritize locally available food and community participation, while supporting local food suppliers and creating a practical, dignified way to address child hunger through education. To date, $22 has been raised, and although this is only an early step toward the $10,000 target, it represents something much bigger: the beginning of a community effort to ensure that children affected by conflict are not left behind because they are hungry. The project was initially planned for implementation beginning in November 2025; ongoing preparation and fundraising are focused on ensuring that implementation is properly resourced and sustainable.

The expected impact goes far beyond a meal. A child who eats before learning has a better chance to concentrate in class, participate actively, attend school regularly, and remain engaged in education. Over time, school meals can contribute to improved well-being, stronger educational opportunities, and greater resilience among children and families affected by conflict and displacement. Every contribution toward this project will help us move closer to a future in which a child's ability to learn is not determined by whether their family can afford the next meal. Our $10,000 goal is ambitious, but we believe it is achievable through collective action. With the support and fundraising partnership of GlobalGiving, we are reaching a wider community of international donors who can help turn this vision into a lasting intervention for children in Goma.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to GlobalGiving and to every donor who has already believed in this project and contributed to its beginning. Your support gives us encouragement and reminds us that children living through conflict have not been forgotten. We now invite individuals, foundations, organizations, and compassionate supporters around the world to join us. A donation to this project is not simply the cost of a meal it is an investment in a child's health, education, dignity, and future. Together, we can help put a warm meal in the hands of a child, a renewed sense of hope in their heart, and a stronger future within their reach. Please stand with the children of Goma and help us reach our $10,000 goal. Every contribution matters. Every donor can make a difference.
