Engage refugee students to English learning

Salariin Kampuchea is committed to providing quality learning opportunities for disadvantaged children and young people. During the first half of 2026, Salariin Kampuchea Learning Center successfully implemented a range of educational activities designed to support children's learning and development across different areas. These initiatives directly benefited refugee children, their families, and the wider community.

Many refugee children face significant disruptions to their education due to displacement, conflict, and limited access to learning opportunities. These challenges often result in learning gaps, reduced confidence, and limited opportunities for personal and academic development. English language education can play an important role in helping refugee students continue their education, communicate effectively, and prepare for future opportunities.

To address these challenges, Salariin Kampuchea Organization implemented an English Learning Program designed to provide refugee students with a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment where they could develop essential English language skills.

We invite you to read our report below to learn more about our activities, achievements, and the positive impact of our programs.

Our objectives

Increase refugee students' access to quality English education.
Improve students' English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
Build learners' confidence in communicating in English.
Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
Encourage regular school attendance and active participation in learning.

What we implemented

During the reporting period, the following activities were conducted:

Organized English classes for refugee students at beginner and elementary levels.
Conducted interactive lessons using games, songs, storytelling, role-playing, and group discussions.
Practiced daily English conversations to improve speaking confidence.
Introduced reading and writing exercises appropriate to students' language levels.
Encouraged teamwork through pair and group learning activities.
Assessed students' progress through quizzes, and classroom.
Provided encouragement and emotional support to help students adapt to their learning environment.
Provided food supplies and packages to their parents and other refugees.

Outcomes

The program achieved several positive results:

Refugee students demonstrated increased enthusiasm for learning English.
Students improved their vocabulary, pronunciation, and basic communication skills.
Classroom participation increased as students became more confident speaking English.
Students developed stronger relationships with classmates through collaborative learning activities.
Teachers observed noticeable improvements in students' confidence, motivation, and classroom engagement.
130 families got packages of food from our school and organization.

Challenges

Several challenges were encountered during implementation:

Irregular attendance due to family circumstances and relocation.
Limited teaching materials and learning resources.
Our food supplies can only support their living lives in a short period.

Lessons Learned

The project highlighted several important lessons:

Continuous encouragement and positive reinforcement improve students' confidence.
Strong collaboration with families and community members helps improve attendance and learning outcomes.

Recommendations

To strengthen future implementation, it is recommended to:

Expand English classes to reach more refugee students.
Provide additional learning materials, books, and educational technology.
Strengthen partnerships with local schools, community organizations, and donors to ensure long-term sustainability.

Conclusion

The English Learning Program has provided refugee students with valuable educational opportunities during a challenging period in their lives. Through engaging, interactive, and supportive learning experiences, students have improved their English language skills while developing greater confidence, motivation, and hope for their future. Continued investment in refugee education will help empower these young learners to achieve their full potential and contribute positively to their communities.

What more

- Khmer new year: In April, we arranged the Khmer New Year Farewell party for children to engage them and offer them food, funs and joyfulness with playing Khmer traditional games.

- Certificate party: After two years graduated successfully from their English courses, our students got their certificate of graduation from English, Chinese and Computer program. As a result, 150 students got their certificates. They are very happy and joyful. Their parents and the guardians came to the ceremony to congratulate their children’ learning achievement.

In the coming three months, we plan to:

Arrange Pchum Ben farewell lunch for children.
Arrange lucky draw for offering luck gift to disadvantaged children and appreciation who have achieved their learning outcomes.
Provide extra support to children who come to school earlier.
Install and add a few computers’ donation from Keith, our volunteer into computer program to replace the one broken.
Develop and finalize our curriculum and scheme of works for teachers to improve teaching and learning activities.

Improve Infrastructure for Better Learning Environment

Salariin Kampuchea engages the community and parents in different activities in its project areas. Over the last three months have been positive and noticed changes in our learning center with infrastructure improvement and development so far. During the reporting period, Salariin Kampuchea Learning Center successfully implemented several key activities aimed at improving school infrastructure, enhancing student safety, and promoting holistic student development. These efforts directly benefited students, staff, and the wider school community.

1. Construction of Student Toilets

At the end of 2025, to improve hygiene and sanitation, two new toilets were constructed for female student use. Prior to this, the school faced challenges with limited sanitation facilities for female and male students. Approximately 300 students and plus staff have comfortable access to the toilets. It is supporting regular attendance and well-being: As a result, students now have access to safe and clean sanitation facilities, contributing to a more conducive learning environment.

One of our students, Reaksa expressed her feeling about new toilets for girls. “Hello everyone, my name is Theany, I am very exciting to use toilets separately from boys. I feel more comfortable and secure of having toilets for us. Before, I am afraid of going to toilets because boy’s toilet is closed girl’s toilet but right now we have separately. Thanks to our supporters who donated to make it happened.

2. School Fence Construction
A protective fence was built around the school to ensure a safer and more secure environment for all children and students. Furthermore, we easily hang banners for enrollment campaign for community students and parents. They can get more information on boards/banners instead of asking information with our receptionist in office regarding to new course and study record from their children.

3. Public Speaking Contest

in December 2025, we arranged and organized a speaking competition. The school-wide Public Speaking Contest was organized to develop students’ confidence, English communication skills, and public presentation abilities. There were 162 students participated in the contest. All participating students were selected from simi-final stages from the class elimination. This competition enhanced students’ confidence, critical thinking, and communication skills. In addition, students demonstrated improved speaking abilities and greater self-confidence. As a result, there were 15 winners selected from the final competition. They are divided into 5 categories. 4 categories are English speaking contest and 1 category is Chinese speaking contest. As the result, the winners awarded prizes and corticates.

One of our students who won the first place from the speaking contest, Riya expressed her feeling about participating in public speaking contest. “My name is Riya, I am very exciting when I get the top 1 in achieving the first place in the contest. I want to share to my friends that it is not a luck come to me but this is what I do my best to practice my English-speaking skills. Today is me but tomorrow will be you so do your best to study and practice your English with your friends.”

4. Christmas Celebration

A Christmas celebration event was held with students and staff to promote joy, unity, and cultural exchange. More 150 students and staff participated

In the event. Students experienced a sense of belonging and happiness through shared activities, dancing, singing and celebrations at our school.

In the coming three months, we plan to:

Proving English lessons, the refugee children from border conflict
Offering food supplies to refugees
Organize certificate ceremony to English, Chinese and Computer students who graduated successfully
Arrange Khmer New Year party

Strengthening Our School and Community Together

Salariin Kampuchea engages the community and parents in different activities in its project areas. Over the last three months have been positive and noticed changes in our learning center. We are excited to share the latest progress from our community and school activities. Thanks to your generosity and encouragement, we were able to carry out several meaningful initiatives this month that strengthened both education and community engagement.

1. Road Repairs Connecting the Community to the School
We worked with local community members to repair the main access roads leading to the school. These improvements have made it safer and easier for children to walk or bike to class, especially during the rainy season. This has already reduced late arrivals and increased school attendance.

2. Parent Meeting Hosted at the School
We successfully organized a parent meeting to discuss students’ progress, upcoming activities, and ways to strengthen cooperation between families and teachers. Parents shared valuable feedback and expressed appreciation for being involved in their children’s education.

3. Spelling Bee Competition for Students
Our students participated in a fun and inspiring Spelling Bee competition! This activity boosted their confidence, improved English vocabulary, and encouraged healthy competition. Parents, teachers, and classmates cheered for the participants, making it a memorable event for everyone.

4. Pchum Ben (Ancestor’s Day) Celebration
Together with children and staff, we celebrated Pchum Ben, one of Cambodia’s most important traditional holidays. The celebration included cultural activities, sharing food, and learning about the values of gratitude, remembrance, and family. It was a warm and joyful moment that brought everyone closer.

Looking Ahead

In the coming three months, we plan to:

Build two new toilets for students
Build school fence
Organize a Public Speaking Contest at school
Celebrate Christmas day with children and staff
