Traffic police presents about traffic law
Traffic police presents about traffic law

Every year, our school conducts different workshops to the community, students and staff in order to develop and improve capacity, knowledge, skills and sharing experiences among our stakeholders. These workshops are traffic workshop, and First Aid Training. These workshops benefit and influent to the community and our school itself. So pleased read more how the workshops conducted and influenced to our people in the community where we work with.

Traffic law workshop

After our communication with Siem Reap Police Commissionaire, they agreed to offer the workshop about traffic law, traffic signs and traffic fines to our community. The police expert comes and shares the workshop. There are over 200 participants in the workshop. These include parents, students and teachers at our school, Salariin Kampuchea organization. .

During the workshop, firstly the police officer presented generally the slides about traffic accidents, case study, penalty, traffic law and signs in Cambodia to the participants. The participants felt really scared and upset when they saw the accident pictures shown in the presentation. Next the police expert showed the reasons why accidents happened. The most of the reasons are fast driving over speed limited; don’t respect the traffic law, and drunk driving. In the figures shown that in average 10 people died every day in traffic accident in Cambodia.

Secondly, he shortly presented about the traffic signs in Cambodia. These included accident signs, warning signs, direction and information signs, turn left, right, single entry, odd and even signs as well as traffic light signs for example, red light is for stop, yellow is for speed reduction and green light is for travelling.

In additional, the police expert explains about the penalty and fine when people do not respect the law and commit against the law. For example, a motorbike driver drives without helmet; drive faster than speed limited, what fine they will get and how much they have to pay the fine to the police.

Finally, there are a lot of questions asked from participants to the police officer. First question was how many meters we could use right or left light of our motorbike/car before the destination arrive? Second question was if a driver don’t wear a helmet how much fine they would get? Etc.

To sum up, this workshop was important for our people, our community, students, teachers and parents. They learnt and again a lot knowledge and experiences from the workshop. They really enjoyed the workshop and they would like to have the workshop again in the future. It is also helpful to reduce traffic accidents and avoid the accidents because they realize and they learnt. Below is the feeling of our staff who expressed her understanding.

Chandy, one of our staff expresses her feeling about traffic law workshop. “Hello, my name is Chandy. I am an accountant and receptionist at Salariin Kampuchea Organization. I learnt a lot from the traffic workshop. I learn how to drive properly, I realize about the punishment/fine when I drive again the signs or don’t respect the law. I feel really scared when I saw the pictures of traffic accidents. For me, I feel that it is useful for our people to learn from the workshop in order to avoid the accidents. I think other communities and children could have this workshop, too”.

First Aid Training workshop

In order to improve First Aid understanding and ability of our teachers and staff who work with children and adults, our school invited our volunteers who experienced and qualified about First Aid to share among our team members. It was divided into three sessions separately. One session lasted for one hour and half.

Firstly, our volunteer presented about general rules of First Aid focusing on CPR, DRABC and chocking. She showed the slides and explained each topic based on theory as well as the rules. After that she applied and practice on CPR, how to serve victim, how to put hands on chest and make moment for CPR, listen people breath and make airway of victim and how to keep the victim safe after they are conscious.

Furthermore, we also practiced on chocking one by one among our team members who join the training. When we help a victim when he/she got a chock, what we can do to help the victims when we see people get a chocking so she asked us to practice with one another. After the slide presentation, we start to practice; we use and press our hands softly under chest of the victim and then hold them and pull out our hand on their chest. It is a very good example to learn and practice. We all really enjoy the training with a lot of fun.

David, one of our staff expresses his feeling about First Aid Training workshop. “Hello, I am David. I am IT and English teacher at Salariin Kampuchea Organization. I think it is good to know how to help people weather who get injures. I got First Aid training with a volunteer. I feel it is most important helping a victim before sending them to a hospital. I highly recommend to everyone should have First Aid knowledge in our daily life”.

Pupils and community see the plastic show
Pupils and community see the plastic show

Every year, human beings used million tons of plastic around the world and this affects to climate change, lives and global environment. To avoid this negative impact, Salariin Kampuchea organized the plastic workshop for130 people. This includes parents, students and community leaders that conducted by Bamboo Stage group and cooperated with Global Action for Environment Awareness Company (Gaea) in Siem Reap. Please read more how the workshop conducted and how it influences and educates children and young people and community.

How the Plastic workshop run?

Firstly, we asked Global Action for Environment Awareness Company (Gaea) for environment experts/educators to the workshop for the community at our school. Second, during the workshop, the environment expert from Gaea introduce about the disaster and negative impact from plastic used by human beings on our planet every year. They also educate everyone to get involved to reduce plastic use as much as possible. Thirdly, Bamboo Stage did their show for the participants.

The show was about Angko Roo talking about people use too much plastic daily for living. They throw plastic everywhere. These plastic includes straw, plastic sack, bag, biodegradable package…etc. Then couples of chicken, hens and cocks where they used to live with fresh and friendly environment started to eat those plastics that human beings throw on the ground. The animals like hens and cocks do not know it is plastic so they eat it. Furthermore, human beings themselves had heath problem, too. As the results, animals and human beings got sick and died because hens and cocks ate food and plastic from plastic sack. Whereas human beings got influent from plastic when they burn it and they breathe the air from the smoke around them.

Overall, the show wanted to educate that people use too many plastic for their daily lives affect to the planet, environment, people health, animals and living things. They realized better about environment and they reduce plastic use in their living. Finally, all participants walked, cleaned and picked up plastic and rubbish in the community.

Sopheak, one of our students expresses her feeling about the plastic workshop and the show. “Hello, my name is Sopheak. I am a student at Salariin Kampuchea Organization. A few months ago, I participated in the plastic rubbish workshop conducted at Salariin Kampuchea. For me, I am very interesting in the workshop and I really enjoy the show because I have learnt about the negative impact of plastic and community engagement for cleaning environment. For me, before I have never known clearly how to manage rubbish and its pollution and I did not know also how my daily actions affect to pollute the environment but after I joined the workshop, I know better. I know every sing life for example human, animals, fish, land, air need cleaning environment on the planet”.

For the community I think that when they understand about the negative impact of the plastic or rubbish, they will engage with environment management or engage in cleaning our environment. Then they will become a role model for other communities. Finally, everyone get involved to take of their own action and clean, manage rubbish and reduce plastic then our planet is cleaned and then climate change is no longer.

In the next three months, we will arrange a traffic law workshop, first Aid training, paint the school and hand washing.

We would like to thanks everyone who supported us through GlobalGiving with your hard earning money. Width your help we hope to continue and build upon the success of our non-formal education program.

We wish you happy New Year, every success, happiness and enjoy it with your family and friends!

How English Spelling Bee Competition Run?

Firstly, students are divided into two groups of Spelling Bee students, group beginning learners called Honey Bee, and group Intermediate learners called Busy Bee. For Honey Bee group has got word list with 700 English words and Busy Bee group has got word list with 1200 English words. Both teams have a period of one month and half to learn how to spell the words provided before they start to practice the spelling words.

Secondly, both groups start to practice in their classes conducted by their class teachers. They practice from list 1 till list 12 (1 list consists 100 English words.

Thirdly, all students who join the Spelling Bee competition for both groups are eliminated from their classes. Each class needs only 3 winners in order to join the final competition.

Final Spelling Bee Competition

Each class selected 3 winners either Honey Bee group or Busy Bee group. In the final day, there are 3 committees, reader, timer and listener committee. There are 21 students from Honey Bee and there are 12 students from Busy Bee. For each group, Honey Bee and Busy Bee students are eliminated to find out 3 winners (first, second and third place) mean 3 winners for Honey Bee and 3 winners for Busy Bee.

Spellers for each group come to the committees and spell the word from reader committee. We do this round and round till we get 3 winners.

Finally, we announce the 3 champion spellers, number 1, number 2 and number 3 from both groups. To congratulate to the champion spellers, we award them with study maters, books, pens, pencils, and dictionary and appreciation certificates. Below are the messages from two champion spellers.

In the name of a student who gets successful, the first place of champion speller for 1200 English words, I am very excited and proud of myself because it is the first time for me. I would recommend and share to my friends about why I become the first place. There are many reasons why I get it because I invest more time to study at home besides studying at school. I also read more about wordlist and try to remember how to spell them. Another reason, I am encouraged by my friends. They make me become stronger and working hard. Both things can push me successfully.

One student, Vern, the second place champion speller from Honey Bee (700 English words) expresses his feeling and opinion about participation in the Spelling Bee completion. “My name is Vern. Since I study at Salariin Kampuchea, I feel happy that I have many friends and teachers who teach me and make this Spelling Bee competition. It selected the students who have ability to spell the English words. I really try my best to spell and remember how to spell the words that teachers teach in order to jump to the final selection. I read words and spell words again and again either at home and at school. I also ask my sister to read words for me to spell before the final competition as well as I learn how to spell them by myself, too. These are reasons that make me to be the second champion spellers for 700 English words.  Finally, thank you for Salariin Kampuchea.
