REGISTERING GEM IN SIERRA LEONE: Our Plan to Educate and Empower Girls in Sierra Leone

By Keturah Shammah | Project Leader

Dear Partners of Girls Education Mission International,

This is to tahnk you for your believe in our mission and consitent support  for our girls in Nigeria.

It is a pleasure to disclose our plan for the girls in Sierra Leone.

Following significant impact of Girls Education Mission International (GEM International) campaigns in Sierra Leone, in collaboration with ACESS World, we've conducted a survey with 112 girls in Sierra Leone, focusing on various critical aspects affecting their lives, education, and well-being.

The survey conducted with 112 girls in Sierra Leone revealed significant challenges affecting their lives, education, and well-being. Key findings include:

  • Health Issues: Many girls suffer from malnutrition and have limited access to healthcare services.
  • Safety Concerns: A significant number of girls reported feeling unsafe, with frequent instances of harassment and gender-based violence.
  • Mental Health: Stress and anxiety are common, often due to academic pressures, family expectations, and societal norms.
  • Education Access: While most girls are enrolled in school, irregular attendance is common due to financial difficulties, household responsibilities, and a lack of educational materials. They are also dissatisfied with the quality of education, citing overcrowded classrooms, underqualified teachers, and a lack of resources.
  • Cultural Barriers: Early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and traditional gender roles hinder educational opportunities. Communities vary in their support for girls' education, and traditional norms often limit girls' potential.
  • Menstrual Health: Many girls lack access to sanitary products and proper hygiene facilities, leading to school absenteeism during menstruation. There is also a significant gap in menstrual health education.

GEM International's Plan: The survey results highlight the importance of establishing a formal presence in Sierra Leone to address these challenges directly. This would allow GEM International to strengthen partnerships, advocate for girls' education and rights, and implement effective programs.

Need for Funding: The organization requires funding to provide financial assistance, sanitary products, health services, and education programs. Funding is also needed to train teachers, community leaders, and GEM staff to better support the girls.

The survey underscores the urgent need for GEM International's formal registration in Sierra Leone and the critical need for funding to implement targeted interventions that could transform the lives of girls in the country.

As we celebraate our successes together for the impact in Nigeria, we also hpe for more support  for our initative in Sierra Leone.

Thank You for being a constatnt supporter to of Mission and Vision.

With Gratitude from all of us at
