Having been forced from their forest homes and into a life of farming, on very limited land, the Batwa pygmies are among the poorest and most marginalized peoples in Africa. Currently trapped in an unremitting cycle of hunger and poverty, the Batwa desperately need more land so that they can access adequate levels of food, fight poverty, and create a better future: This campaign aims to fund the purchase of 10 acres of land, to create a better life for 150 Batwa families.
The Batwa are an indigenous grouping of tree-dwelling Pygmies who have been displaced from their native forests - despite managing the forests carefully and sustainably back into the mists of time, they were controversially evicted from their forest homes in the name of conservation and eco-tourism. Because of this, the Batwa are now mired in poverty, with very limited access to farmland because of the inflated prices caused by corporate farmers and land-grabbers.
Purchasing more farmland will enable the Batwa to grow more food, and develop new income streams from crops such as coffee - this in turn will enable them to break the poverty cycle. Therefore, this project aims to buy 10 acres of land to support 150 Batwa families, for a total of $30,000. When you donate to this Sanuriro Batwa Community Development Association project, you will be helping the Batwa fight poverty and create a brighter future for their children.
This project aims to help 150 Batwa families permanently escape poverty in its many forms - improving their lives by combating problems such as food scarcity, and restricted access to healthcare and education. Another aim we have is to connect with other groups of displaced people in Africa, and beyond, inspiring others to follow our path - so, once this project is up and running, we will create an information website that shares our experience, best practices and knowledge.
