KamParaIso KamParaIso KamParaIso
Heading to Mangagoy Central Elementary School Oval, - “The Site,” Happy faces of volunteers, prime movers, parents and children could clearly be seen. Though not new to some, the feelings of aggressiveness and excitement are still there. Different committee members were on the “GO” doing their respective tasks. Site preparation/clean-up was part of their 1st day activities after which camp orientation, final groupings and team Cheer practice followed. The 1st night was brightened with a “Getting-to-know” each other party and a bonfire, to welcome all the campers and be one in this week-long activity. Seventy-two (72) children with disabilities were registered coming from different municipalities from all of CARAGA Region, including Bislig City, Butuan City, Municipality of Trento, Sta. Josefa, and San Francisco. Different reactions and facial expressions were seen to campers, especially to the first time campers when their parents turned-over them to their respective ates and kuyas. Some cried, some were very happy, and some never reacted at all. Parents and the volunteers were given at least an hour to talked to each other and gave the volunteer an idea about the child, his needs, wants and the dislikes of the child to prevent child from tantrums. The activity lasted to 5 days. It was a 5 days long activity packed with fun through different sports to develop their skills their spirit of camaraderie and help the special children how to trust their selves, there were also theatrical activities to enhance their talents and lots of activities just for the special children feel special not only in their family but in the entire community. Indeed, the entire event became instrumental in creating awareness in the society that these special children too have the right to enjoy the gift of life and that they have the big chance to become independent, self-reliant and develop positive attitudes if only given the chance and the opportunity. Parents must take note also that having a special child in the family do bring neither misfortune nor a problem to them but rather would surely be an asset and would be a great help not just in the family but also in the society in general.
Through the camp conducted, with the help of the precious time extended by the ates and kuyas, most of the special child participated in the said activity now develop their activities of daily living. Most of them are now able to change dress and maintain good grooming without much guidance. Their talents and capabilities of interacting with peers have been developed too. First day of the camp, most of them never want anybody go near to them except their parents, now all of them actively participated all the activities given.
This 5th Summer Camp will never be successful also without the effort from the City Local Government Unit of Bislig City, who shouldered the food expenses of about 240 participants including the campers for 7 days. Private individuals in the city were able to show their love to the children too, through the donations they extended such as toys, used clothing, goodies and a lot more used as gifts to the children.
However, though this summer camp is not the answer of the problem of every person with disabilities but it somehow served and gave the special children an opportunity that enhanced their social life. Might be just a little thing for persons like us but to a special child it made them realized the real beauty of life despite of their impairments.
This annual activity has always been successful through the support we received from Loca Gove’t Units of Bislig City, and from the partner organizations such as the Liliane Fond Philippines and of course Global Giving Organization.
