Canales and Gallaudet Unite for Bilingual Education
Did you know that a groundbreaking collaboration between Canales and Gallaudet University can create new opportunities for deaf children in Argentina?
Last November, a historic week brought together experts, educators, and families to advance bilingual education and celebrate the rich culture of the deaf community.
Melissa Malzkuhn, a brilliant deaf woman, founder of Gallaudet’s award-winning Motion Light Lab in Washington, D.C. visited Buenos Aires to work with Canales.
Melissa’s Lab specializes in blending technology and literature to create educational apps for deaf children in sign language, based on innovative research from the Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2) center at Gallaudet—the only university in the world dedicated to training deaf professionals.
Although Melissa and her team impacted on families, teachers and policy makers, we are absolutely certain that what will make a short term change on deaf children’s lives is her training of Argentine Deaf Leaders. A group of 20 deaf Argentinean representatives from different schools for the deaf experienced Motion Light Lab’s innovative process firsthand, developing resources for young deaf children.
Now, they’re ready to multiply their knowledge and enrich classrooms nationwide. Imagine the ripple effect of these efforts across Argentina!
On the other hand, the Gallaudet team visited Osvaldo Magnasco and Bartolomé Ayrolo Schools, interacting with students and teachers. Melissa 's conversations with children aimed to strengthen their pride in deaf identity. These visits showcased the power of community and innovation in education.
Canales and Gallaudet teams identified ways to optimize the creation of educational materials and maximize their impact across sign languages, introducing cutting-edge innovations like avatar-based sign language series for literacy and learning.
Imagine these tools transforming classrooms in Argentina and beyond!
We have already started a new and inspiring road that we hope to transform it into a highway.
Let’s make this wish come true in 2025!
