Training course to improve deaf children’s access to written language.
Help us expand our impact
A few months ago, the National Ministry of Culture reached out to us, Canales, with an exciting opportunity: to create educational content focused on reading and writing in Sign Language for our programs. Our previous collaboration with the Ministry, where we developed videobooks, sparked a growing interest in making cultural content accessible to the deaf community.
Building on this success, we assembled a dedicated team of professionals, including both hearing and deaf educators, to design a self-guided course aimed at improving deaf children's access to written language. In order to make the content available to everyone, each module is taught both by a deaf and a hearing professor, one in Argentine Sign Language and one in spoken Spanish with subtitles in Spanish. The course begins by introducing key concepts about the deaf community, sign language, and deaf education. It then digs into the significance of reading and writing for deaf children, explaining how bilingual (Sign Language and Spanish) materials are created and how they can be used effectively to teach deaf children to read and write in Spanish.
Last month, the Ministry launched this training course, and the response has been overwhelming: over 1,500 people registered, and within just two weeks, more than 500 participants completed the course and earned their certificates.
We are now planning to expand and enhance this course to reach even more people, particularly teachers who work with deaf children. Our goal is to create a brighter future for deaf children not just in Argentina, but across other Spanish-speaking countries as well.
Your support has always been crucial to our success. We hope you will continue to stand by us as we strive to benefit thousands of deaf children around the world.
