Project Report | Nov 10, 2024
July - October Report

By Joseph Ddiba | Team Leader

Project Overview:
The construction of the multi-sports court at our Kayunga Community Center is central to Ba Nga Afayo Initiative Uganda’s mission to provide rural children with a safe, structured space for sports. This facility will encourage physical activity, teamwork, and community engagement for youth in Kayunga District.

Progress Summary (July – October):

  1. Fundraising Success:
Over the past few months, we have made significant strides in fundraising through offline initiatives to secure the necessary funds for the multi-sports court construction. Community events, local fundraising drives, and partnerships with local businesses and sports enthusiasts in Uganda have raised substantial resources, allowing us to finalize the initial phases of the project. The response from community members and supporters has been incredibly positive, demonstrating the community’s shared commitment to this facility. These efforts have brought us close to reaching the total project cost needed to complete the construction phase.

  2. Land Preparation and Equipment Installation:

    • Land Clearing: The land has been maintained and cleared to prepare for the next construction steps.
    • Basketball Posts: Previously installed basketball posts remain in place, ready for use once the court’s base is complete.
  3. Project Timeline Update:
With the recent success in fundraising, we are scheduled to begin construction of the court's concrete base in late November. This phase will address critical needs, including leveling the ground, installing drainage solutions, and laying a durable concrete base.

Challenges and Immediate Needs:

  • Grass Overgrowth: Due to delays in construction, there has been grass overgrowth on the cleared land, which we continue to manage until construction begins.
  • Flooding Issues: To mitigate water accumulation, our construction plans include implementing proper drainage solutions to ensure year-round usability of the court.
  • Concrete Base: Casting the concrete base remains the most essential step to provide a safe and usable playing surface.

Financial Update:

With the recent fundraising efforts, we have reached $3000. However, we continue to seek support to ensure we can manage any unforeseen costs related to drainage and finishing touches for the court.

Impact of Completion:

Once completed, the multi-sports court will provide the following benefits:

  • Safe Play Space: A structured and safe environment for rural children to engage in sports.
  • Health and Wellness: Opportunities for regular physical activity, which promotes fitness and mental well-being.
  • Community Engagement: A shared space for community members to gather, fostering unity and positive relationships.
  • Skill and Talent Development: A platform for children to hone their sports skills and develop teamwork, discipline, and leadership.

We are grateful for the ongoing support that is bringing this vision closer to reality. With construction set to begin in November, we look forward to sharing further updates on the progress and ultimate completion of the multi-sports court, which will be a lasting asset to the Kayunga community.
