Madam Shu is a single mother and a survivor of abuse with five children living in Bamenda - Cameroon. Two of her children, Joy and Queeniva, have sickle cell disease: a condition with a high mortality rate, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. To improve their odds, Joy and Queeniva need to have uninterrupted access to drugs and treatment, and to feed with enough and nutritious food. Madam Shu lives on very limited income. Your donation can help her give them what they need.
It is estimated that as many as 20% of Cameroonians carry the sickle cell trait, which will manifest if both parents have it. When a child is born with this condition there is a high likelihood they die during childhood. This is both because it is a very harmful condition that breaks down red cells in the blood and because the average family in Cameroon may not have the means to provide all the available health treatment and nutrition that children with this condition need.
All key drugs are available in the health system but many families can't afford them regularly. You can support a monthly cash transfer dedicated to medical services, drugs, and quality food. We give micro transfers every month and ensure treatment is not interrupted. With improved nutrition and constant access to drugs and medical oversight, children living with sickle cell have much better quality of life and usually make it to adulthood.
In 2023, Effective Help identified this project as one of the most cost-effective of Cameroon and agreed to raise funds for it. What started as help for one family in need can become a safety net to hundreds. Effective Help also conducts regular monitoring and verification to guarantee your donation is used as intended and we report transparently all findings.
