Hello Backup Family,
It's been a busy few months for inclusive education in Uganda! From sharing research and exchanging ideas at national conferences to celebrating Dyslexia Awareness Day, we've had plenty of opportunities to learn, connect, and spread the word about inclusive education. Here's what we've been up to!
Taking Our Results to the National Stage
On 20–21 August, we participated in the 2nd International Conference on Curriculum Development, organized by the National Curriculum Development Centre in Kampala.
Backup Uganda presented findings comparing pre-service teachers (those still in training) and in-service teachers (those already working in schools) after they completed our training on identifying and supporting learners with learning difficulties and disabilities.
And what did we discover? Both groups became much better at identifying learners who might need additional support. However, when it came to actually providing individualized support, in-service teachers were doing most of the work (compared to pre-service teachers during their school practice).
Learning Together at the Special Needs & Inclusive Education Conference
On 24–25 September, we headed to Tororo for the Special Needs & Inclusive Education Conference, organized by the Ministry of Education and Sports with significant support from Backup Uganda and other partners.
We were happy to contribute by facilitating an ODII session for around 50 participants. The session introduced participants to AD(H)D (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) while also giving them a taste of our blended teacher training approach.
Dyslexia Awareness Day: Nearly 250 People Coming Together
On 2 October, we co-organized Dyslexia Awareness Day at Makerere University in Kampala, and what a day it was!
Nearly 250 participants came together to learn, exchange experiences, and discuss how we can better identify and support learners with dyslexia. Speakers joined us from Uganda and across the borders, bringing a range of perspectives and ideas to the conversation.
One topic that generated particular interest was the need for stronger evidence that reflects the Ugandan context. While international research provides valuable insights, we also need locally relevant knowledge to understand the experiences of Ugandan learners and identify the support that works best for them.
New ODII Workbooks Are Here!
We also have something new to celebrate: our beautifully designed ODII workbooks!
Teachers completing our training through the ODII blended package are now receiving these upgraded workbooks to support their learning. They provide an additional resource teachers can return to as they develop their understanding of learning difficulties and disabilities and explore ways to make their classrooms more inclusive.
Thank You for Being Part of This Journey!
From sharing our work at national conferences to bringing hundreds of people together for Dyslexia Awareness Day, these past few months have reminded us how much can happen when people work towards a common goal.
Your support helps us train teachers, develop practical resources, and contribute to a growing conversation about inclusive education in Uganda. Together, we're helping build a future where every learner is recognized, supported, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Thank you for being part of it!
Much love,
The Backup Uganda Team
